Bedroom Spring Cleaning Checklist for my Teens

March 14, 2019

Time for spring cleaning and that means your teenager’s bedroom, too! Are you sometimes afraid to walk in your teen’s bedroom? I know ours can get pretty rough sometimes. I mean with stinky gym clothes, gym bags and last month’s sleepover, things can get out of hand pretty quickly.

When they were little, it was easy to just go in there and clean up. Now, they don’t really want us poking around in their space. But they still live under our roof right? I do want my teens to learn to clean, and to know how to deep clean. At this point they should be able to, wanting to however is another story. I wish I could just bribe them with a piece of candy like when they were little? Do you think that would still work?

That’s where my checklist comes in. I’ve actually used this checklist with my teens so they know exactly what I expect them to do. One thing that I have learned with teens is, that it’s all about expectation and what you explicitly expect them to do. I could say do your laundry, to me that means, treat, wash, fold and put away. They might only hear “Stuff the laundry in the closet.” Not exactly what I meant. But with this checklist, it’s all there for them to see.

Teen Bedroom Spring Clean

Each teen is different, but at least the checklist covers just about everything and it cuts back on the arguing. I have one teen that if I say “Spring clean your room”, she will scrub every inch and then be all over Pinterest researching Marie Kondo folding techniques and Martha Stewart for organization tips. I have one that will do a good job of tidying up but needs some guidance with the deep cleaning (Do you know where I keep the broom?) and then I have one, that gets distracted by what is found in their bedroom and it takes days and days to get around to cleaning it, forget deep cleaning.

But at least if they have this checklist, they have something to go by. They have a starting point and I can just let them go at it and help if needed. It also keeps them from coming to me asking what’s next. It also puts the responsibility in their hands and not mine. How do you get your teens to clean their rooms? Post your tips and tricks here!

Thanks for these ideas. I know teens have to make their own checklist in regards to cleaning their bedroom or the kinds of stuff like household chores so that they may know how it’s important to maintain the cleanliness in not for themselves but also in their surroundings. Well, done!

This is actually a really awesome list, and not just for teens (like myself). I was never really taught how to “deep” clean my room and for a long time I always wondered how do I make my room/dorm/apartment look neat and I’m really thankful you shared this bit of info.
