I have been toying around with an idea for a couple of years now. But, it never seemed to be the right time, until now. The idea I originally had was to have a day at my church in which all of the homeschoolers from our church and their children had lunch with our staff and leadership. Simple enough of an idea. Well, what’s the big deal about that? My first reason for the luncheon was because sometimes our pastor, children’s pastor or youth pastor would go to eat lunch at the public or private schools with some of the kids from our church. Since our kids and many others at our church were homeschooled, they didn’t get that opportunity and I thought this would be a good alternative. Also, it would give our pastor and staff a chance to get to know the homeschoolers of our church. I had talked to several friends and our pastor and they like the idea and some friends said they would like to do it at their church also. Well, I was never able to get it together. But, the idea has never gone away. With everything that is going on today and the need for all of us to get to know each other again, the idea has been brought back. Today, I was sitting in church, it popped back in my head. But, on a much larger scale. Our pastor was talking about why should Christians be afraid to speak out? Why should we allow the world to tell us how to live our lives? The thought came to me ” Why should homeschoolers be so afraid to speak out?” “Why shouldn’t we stand up for ourselves?”Then I thought if there was one day that all homeschoolers could set aside together to have lunch with our pastors, whether they are supportive of homeschooling or not, imagine what we could. The one day could turn into much more. A celebration of the history and heritage of homeschooling, a day to let the government know that we do not want our rights taken away, a day to stand up for being a parent, etc. A day of prayer for homeschooling, parenting, our children and our government. What do you think? I would really appreciate some ideas. I’ve already contacted HSLDA to find out if there is an anniversary/birthday for homeschooling in the states. But, any other date suggestions would be appreciated!
