Ok, this is going to ruffle feathers. Here goes! I don’t think that all kids are made for college. There I said it. I heard Donald Trump talking this morning, and although I don’t agree with him about everything, I do about this. They were discussing education and it’s problems. (I actually didn’t hear the whole discussion.) They discussed our place in education compared to the world and how we are compared to everyone else. Then he said something to the effect (not quoting here) that schools need to get over the idea that everyone is meant for college.
I really started listening then! I’ve always felt like that. I do realize he’s talking about the four-year university type of college. He does believe in education, but a more tailored version. Anyway, why do we push our kids to go to a four-year college? Do we not need plumbers, electrician, carpenters, masons, and more? What about seamstresses, bakers, beauticians? When did we become so snobbish as Americans that these jobs are looked down on? Probably in the 80’s (ha ha ha!) I certainly don’t look down on them. These are the jobs that are going to be in demand in a few years. Have you noticed that most of the people who are doing these jobs are getting older? How many kids do you hear that are pursuing these jobs? You know, the jobs that you get by a two-year degree or an apprenticeship? What about farming? I keep hearing on the news that these are the jobs that will be a shortage of qualified workers for because no one is going to school for these jobs.
I believe in education just as much as the next person; but tailored to the person. When did Americans get so caught up with keeping up with other countries and doing things their way? What happened to doing things the American way? I don’t want to be like the Chinese schools!
That’s why I love homeschooling! We can tailor our kids’ education to their strengths, their God-given talents. I want my children to further their education, but if it’s not at a four-year university, then so be it. I want them to do what God leads them to do and enjoy what they do. What do you think? I’d love to hear back from you!
