Girlfriends Guide 2

Because Homeschooling Is A Lifestyle

Where Are the Fashion Mags for Christian Women?

April 9, 2012

Image Detail

I love fashion!  I might not dress fashionably all the time, but I still love fashion.  I love make-up, clothes (and not necessarily name brand), hairstyles, you know, all the girly stuff.  But, I can’t find a magazine for me.

Who am I?  A Christian grown-up (well, on a good day!) woman that is looking for a magazine to fulfill my desire of knowledge for the latest fashion trends, hairstyles and cosmetics and more.  Just because I’m Christian doesn’t mean that I give up wanting to know what the latest style trends are.  There have to be more women than just me that want to know these things.

What’s wrong with the magazines that are already out there?  Well, for one, I used to get Glamour magazine delivered to my mailbox years ago.  It was great at first, and then it turned in to nothing much more than pages and pages of advertisements and sex advice.  Ew!  Gross!  I’ve thumbed through it several times while standing in line at the store and not much has changed and Cosmo is even worse.

Then there’s Woman’s Day and the like, what’s wrong with them?  Nothing, for the most part, they are really good mags that I read from time to time.  They just don’t cover enough of fashion for my taste.  Matter of fact, I’m in love with Better Homes and Gardens!  But, there’s no clothing and makeup looks in it, but it’s been great at giving me amazing ideas for my home.

What’s wrong with the Christian magazines for women today?  Not a thing!  I just wished they included fashion, makeup, decorating, etc.  I miss that part.  Is that wrong?  Is it wrong to want to see the latest spring colors and makeup trends in a Christian magazine?  I don’t think so.  I don’t remember one of the commandments being you shall not dress stylishly.  I understand modesty and all that, I’m totally for it!  I encourage it.   But even Christian women want to keep up with the styles or am I alone here?  Wouldn’t you like to see ideas on what you could wear as a Christian woman for a romantic date with your husband?  What about how to wear those new jeans with the latest white shirt for a casual afternoon?  Is that wrong?

Does it have to do with vanity?  Is it vanity to want to know what the color trend is going to be for this spring?  Which is Tangerine Tango, by the way.  Is it vanity wanting to know how to wear a chunky belt with a bat-winged shirt?  Is it vanity to know what boot height will be in this fall?  Is it vanity to want to know how to achieve the pretty fluttery eye that everyone is wearing?  I don’t think so.

I want my soul fed.  I want to read parenting articles.  I want to read about the latest Christian books out there and devotionals.  I want to read articles about family and marriage.  But I want more.  I want real movie reviews.  I want decorating tips.  I want someone who can take today’s fashion trends and show me how I can wear them, and yes, as a Christian.  Am I asking for too much?

I write Unwrinkling.com, a site that tries to think about fashion in a theologically and intellectually sound way. I’d love to hear your thoughts about it!

I completely agree with what you’re saying. I am currently scouring the Internet looking for something like what you’re describing. Fashion is an art! It is fun and beautiful and can be used to glorify God just as much as anything else in my opinion. I hope to create a magazine like this someday. When I do I will try to let you know 😉
